about

Lead double single from 3rd album overlove, Delightful/Limerence is my first collaboration with co-producer Richard Knight and defines the palette and vibe of the forthcoming album. Delightful (I Love You Song) builds on the chorus from my 2012 song Medal, which was released with my band Well on our 2013 album ‘All Is’, and augments and elaborates the original motif into a sweet, euphoric, anthemic ode. The song is an expression of ardent love and admiration for someone from afar, with lyrics that capture the wistful abandon of attraction, passion, and desire.

It sets a tone of whole-hearted longing and pining that will pervade the “overlove” album, with its flipside and bittersweet aspects foreshadowed by lyrics “I know I can’t have you, watching you’ll have to do” “S’blagging my head oh, carefully tread, I’m, easily led..” before it segues seamlessly into Limerence. The verse lyrics and new guitar solo were written in 2023 when freshly inspired by new romance, which is also when studio production of this version commenced.

Limerence is a word I was made aware of in 2015 or so by a writer friend, who would hear of my romantic preoccupations and diagnose me accordingly. It describes a state beyond regular crush, lust, love and pair bonding that’s characterised by obsessive, intrusive thoughts about the object of one’s desire, and thrives on lack of reciprocation from them. I have always found myself struggling with this and between 2016-9 I was hurtled into a limerent obsession that occupied most of my attention and contributed to the collapse of my 8 year relationship.

It was elevated or justified through my project overlove, which started as a series of unsent love letters to the object of my obsession, who was a drummer I thought I’d locked eyes with quite strongly at a gig. This developed into a book, published in 2018 by Dostoyevsky Wannabe, and a web series that I posted across 2018-9 and composed an original score for, which - incidentally - will be released on the overlove album in 2024 as the instrumental “Recline Me” (an anagram of limerence) and “overlove”, the series theme tune.

The main themes of the project are self-reflective romantic attachment, projection, obsession, desire, and how to reconcile reality with an overactive imagination and internal ideal. You can find out more about “overlove”, including reviews and essays here www.geraldinesnell.com/overlove , but the gist of the concept as it relates to the 2024 release is to sonically explore and capture the complex emotions around longing, loneliness, and love addiction, struggling to stay afloat amidst dopaminergic highs and melodramatic lows, ever in pursuit of an unattainable connection, and alienating real relationships in the process. This is done in sickly-sweet chords progressions, heart-wrenching major-minors, breathy yet rich vocals, and a slow (60bpm, a good resting heart rate) and sometimes quickening pulse that sets a dreamy, mesmerising rhythm.

Channelling similar vibes as myriad romantic bedroom and dreampop, spectra, and alternative artists, I made a palette playlist of some particular influences here. open.spotify.com/playlist/1xdhAOuIAnEzAJM3zIBBo6

After my melodies, lyrics, phrasing, synth and bass parts, vocals, and rhythmic composition, Richard provided unique percussion from his vast personal sample library, live electric guitar licks and a beautifully executed crescendoing solo in “Delightful (I love you song)” , and an array of bends and effects that embellish the tracks. Working first in my, then Richard’s home studio, we mastered the track in the brilliant Cotton Mill studio at tyx studios, Tileyard North.
